DETROIT (WINK) – An overturned tanker spilled gasoline on a downtown Detroit freeway causing a massive fire Sunday morning.

According to the Michigan State Police, about 9,000 gallons of gasoline was spilled on I-75 shortly before 9 a.m.

Many drivers said they could feel the heat from the fire.

Marathon Oil was called to the scene to use foam to extinguish the flames. Police say the driver was able to escape the truck without injury. The driver, Kai Moore of Detroit, has only been with the company for eight months.

A spokesperson for Nour Light Petroleum says it was their truck that overturned.

The fire was declared a level 2 hazmat situation.
