NORTH FORT MYERS Fla. – A government consultant tells WINK News she had a ride-a-long with the Cape Coral Fire Department in 2013 and was hooked. After becoming a volunteer firefighter, she discovered that firefighters in Florida do not have coverage for cancer under the state’s worker’s compensation laws. She set out to help. Her solution? She pitched an idea to the SWFL Regional Technology Partnership to create a mini computer to record and send data from fires– such as types and amounts of carcinogens–back to a database where it can be recorded.
