Summer-long fundraiser kicks off for students in need

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Kids at Fort Myers High School were booking it to the cars Friday after the last day of school. Finals are finally over which means summer plans are in full swing.

“Diving in the Keys,” one student told WINK News.

“I’m going to New York,” another said.

While most are thinking about the end of school and start of summer, families struggling to get by are already wondering how they’re going to manage next year.

WINK news and MundoFox teamed up to accept donations for the Adopt-a-student campaign.

For just $10, donors can provide a student with a new backpack and school supplies.

“I think those programs are absolutely wonderful,” parent Evelyn Murphy said. “When it comes to kids, they need all the support they can get and I think it’s a wonderful experience.”

Hundreds of families take advantage of the backpack giveaway event by the Multicultural Centre of Southwest Florida every year.

“I think I know a couple of people who could (take advantage),” said student Liana Murphy, “but and I think there should be more of them because it’s great. It makes a great difference.”

Those who have donated in the past say it’s worth it because the first day of school should be just as exciting as the last.
