Cancer patient gets fairy tale wedding

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.- A husband and wife exchanged wedding vows on Friday, but it’s the commitment behind those special words, ‘I do’ that makes their love story, extraordinary. The groom is battling cancer and the wedding is his last wish.

John Dodson and Kathleen Dodson couldn’t be happier, after the day they’ve been dreaming of for 23 years finally arrived.

“I said, ‘well, we wanted to get married’ and Joni said, ‘well, let’s make it happen!'” said Kathleen Dodson.

Guests, flowers, rings and a cake were all present at the ceremony held at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, where John Dodson is battling pancreatic cancer.

“Well I’m married, but it also goes to show, what these people here do to fight for you,” said the groom.

Three weeks ago, John Dodson found out his cancer is terminal, and getting married was his last wish.

“In my book, when you make a commitment, when we moved in together, it was like we got married,” said Kathleen Dodson.

Their 16-year-old daughter and nurses made the day possible.

“I like having all like, the same last name, like were all apart of the Dodson family now,” said Tiffany Dodson.
