GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Authorities say a former Gainesville police officer and local Fraternal Order of Police president stole more than $56,000 from the union.

The Gainesville Sun (http://goo.gl/9NL1tJ ) reports that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement began investigating Jeffery McAdams last year at the request of Gainesville police officials. The FDLE found that McAdams double-billed for thousands in travel expenses and made unapproved purchases on the union’s debit card from 2011 to April 2014.

McAdams was charged with larceny after surrendering to authorities Monday. He was later released on $12,000 bail. Jail records didn’t list an attorney.
