GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) – Students are flocking back into North Carolina’s public universities.

The 16-campus system’s governing board is scheduled to hear Thursday that University of North Carolina schools broke an enrollment record this fall with nearly 225,000 students. A new report says that’s an increase of nearly 3,000 students for the fall semester over the previous year.

Increasing numbers of students entered UNC schools until the Great Recession leveled out admissions.

The increases this academic year came at 11 of the 16 campuses, while five saw decreasing headcounts. They are the Appalachian State, Elizabeth City State, UNC-Chapel Hill, Western Carolina and Winston-Salem State campuses.

The UNC Board of Governors is meeting Thursday and Friday at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.
