Collier DAS rescues 5 dogs abandoned at Golden Gate Estates home

NAPLES, Fla.- Five dogs left abandoned for days inside a Golden Gate Estates home are now in the care of Collier County Domestic Animal Services.

The family renting the house on 15th Avenue Southwest hadn’t been seen since Saturday, according to a neighbor.

“We responded out here for a call from the concerned neighbors because they thought the tenants here had left and left their dogs abandoned inside the house,” said Dan Grossi, Collier County animal control supervisor. “With the help of the sheriff’s office and the property owners, we were able to safely get the dogs out of the house.”

Grossi says three of the dogs were inside the house and two were outside in an enclosed lanai.

“They did have access to some food and water for some of the dogs, but not all of them. Some were without food and water,” Grossi added. “It looked like nobody had been there for a while based on the postings we had taped on the door that were still there from yesterday.”

Outside the home, toys and trash are scattered around the property and Grossi says the inside of the home looks similar. The dogs’ owners could face criminal charges, Grossi said.

“I encourage everyone to be responsible pet owners and if you can’t care for your dogs to either find someone that can or to bring them to us rather than doing this,” Grossi said.

A veterinarian with Animal Services is taking a look at the dogs. If the owners don’t claim the animals and they’re healthy, the dogs will be put up for adoption.
