Collier County men killed in SR 29 crash

IMMOKALEE, Fla.- Two Collier County men were among the victims of a fiery crash along State Road 29 that left three people dead on Thursday.

FHP says 31-year old Ayesha Khaleedah Idlette hit a van head-on trying to pass other vehicles near Oil Well Road. Inside the van were 41-year-old Alejandro Rodriguez and 21-year old Irvin Rodriguez.

“Any area of the state that you go to where there is a rural, two-lane highway, there’s fatal crashes,” said Immokalee Fire Department Chief Paul Anderson.

In the past five years, State Road 29 has seen about 80 crashes.

“It may not be primarily a problem with the road, a lot of people want to try and four-lane the road and that will help,” said Anderson. “There’s a lot of roads throughout the entire state that are two lanes and have a lot of crashes. A good percentage are either entrapment, where the fire department has to cut them out of the car, or fatalities.

But Anderson says to prevent these crashes from happening, drivers need to be more courteous.

“Best thing I can say is drive the speed limit. Don’t go under the speed limit, don’t go over the speed limit and be patient,” Anderson said. “Plan ahead give yourself some extra time to where you’re going and if somebody is impatient and tries to pass a line of cars give them some courtesy while you’re calling them an idiot, hit your brakes, and let them back in.”
