Ammo explodes in Bonita Springs house fire

Published: Updated:

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Live ammunition created a dangerous scene at Melaine Lane on Tuesday when a family’s home was destroyed by a fire.

The ammunition was exploding inside the home, Bonita Springs fire crews said. Two men were outside when they began to see smoke. Those men were not harmed.

Fire crews assessed the risks and decided to try salvaging the home and the family’s belongings, Bonita Springs Fire Chief Joseph Daigle said.

“This was a highly volatile situation and that’s why we have our officers who are trained to make a decision whether to risk a little to save a little or risk a lot to save a lot,” Daigle said.

Once the fire was extinguished, crews had to reenter the home to look for more ammunition.

But the fire left the house charred and the homeowner said losing the house has been difficult.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire to determine its cause.
