Former Lee County middle school teacher accused of misconduct

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A former teacher at Cypress Lake Middle School is accused of making racial slurs in the classroom.

Keith Shult quit before the Lee County School Board could investigate, forcing them to turn the allegations over to the federal government.

“I was like, ‘here you go,’ passing out the folders for everybody and he was like, ‘don’t pass out the folders. You’re passing out the folders to those lazy white people, you’re going to bring back slavery,'” described eighth grade student Kei’riah Bishop. “Why would teachers say that? Who does that?”

Bishop’s friends went straight to the principal and days later Shult resigned writing, “be it known that this resignation was in process before the announcement of current allegations under investigation and not as a result of them.”

Despite his letter to the school district, Shult says he knows “nothing of any allegations” and has “no comment.”

Several interview forms from students detail what they observed in Shult’s class, including inappropriate comments he made about drinking alcohol and even showing them a movie with naked women without any approval. Another student claimed he kicked her when she was sitting on a stool in class.

“I’m glad that they did come forward,” said Jessica Bishop, Kei’riah Bishop’s mother. “I want to thank them for coming forward because had they not, it probably would’ve kept going and it probably would’ve gotten worse.”

An educator misconduct form has been sent to the Department of Education. In it, there’s an email sent from the school district to Shult letting him know directly that they are in possession of materials related to the recent allegations.
