ELK GROVE, Calif. (CNN) — A German shepherd named Frida who wandered a California highway median for at least five weeks will live with one of the police officers who rescued her.

Two officers rescued her and took her to an animal hospital, where she was treated for a broken leg, dehydration and malnourishment. Now, after surgery and a month of rehabilitation, she’s going to her new home.
