Arizona candidate spends campaign funds on teeth-whitening

Published: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) – An Arizona congressional candidate has changed his campaign finance reports to omit questionable expenses for purchases for teeth whitening, new clothes and equipment from a gun shop.

David Giles told the Arizona Republic the purchases were for his campaign and that he was unaware they could violate campaign finance rules.

Federal Election Commission rules prohibit candidates from using campaign funds for personal expenses.

Giles originally included the expenses on reports to the FEC, but then omitted them after a reporter questioned them.

Giles is a Republican running for Democratic U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema’s seat in the 9th District, which includes parts of Phoenix.
