Experts: Some local seafood safe after Pine Island Sound closure

PINE ISLAND SOUND, Fla. – The harvesting of clams, oysters and mussels has been temporarily banned at Pine Island Sound, where the Department of Agriculture found shellfish with saxitoxin, a poisonous substance that causes numbness and tingling of the mouth, dizziness and weakness.

But shrimp, crabs and scallops from the area are still safe, according to the state.
