Settlement reached after teen killed by LCSO patrol car

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A settlement has been reached in a wrongful death suit involving a 15-year-old Cape Coral boy hit and killed by a Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy’s patrol car, the attorney for the boy’s family told WINK News.

The family of Austin Dukette sought at least $15,000 in damages when they filed the suit in April 2015. The attorney said he couldn’t disclose the amount of money changing hands because of a confidentiality agreement.

Dukette’s family alleged that deputy Douglas Hood was negligent and drove with no regard for the safety of others when he hit the boy as he rode his bike to school in August 2014. Cape Coral police cited Hood for failing to maintain his lane, but Hood was found not guilty during a March 2015 traffic court hearing.
