NAPLES, Fla. The Florida Department of Transportation is installing 18 miles of barbed wire fences on both sides of Alligator Alley east of Collier Boulevard in an effort to protect panthers and drivers.
A record 42 panthers died last year, with more than 80 percent killed by cars, according to state wildlife officials.
The project costs $2 million and is expected to be completed by this summer.
