IMMOKALEE, Fla. Two people died in a crash Tuesday night on State Road 29, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Immokalee residents Damian Raheem Rivera, 21, and Amy Sabrina Manzano, 24, were killed in a single-vehicle wreck just before 12 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 29 and New Market Road West, according the FHP.

Rivera, the driver of the 2001 Volvo S60, was traveling on New Market Road at a high rate of speed, and a Collier County Sheriff’s Office deputy tried to conduct a traffic stop, State troopers said.

Rivera was unable to negotiate the curve in the road and collided with a tree, according to State troopers. Following the first collision, the rear of the Volvo then rotated counterclockwise, and the right side of the vehicle hit a power pole.

Rivera and his passenger, Manzano, were pronounced dead at the scene, State troopers said.

The intersection was shut down for most of the night, but reopened just before 6 a.m.

Immokalee Fire Control and Rescue District officials took to Twitter to announce the crash:

It’s unclear if alcohol was involved in the crash, according to State troopers. The crash remains under investigation.
