NEWARK, N.J. The FGCU baseball team crushed the New Jersey Institute of Technology 20-1 in Game 2 of the three-game conference series Saturday.

The Eagles slugged seven home runs against NJIT, breaking the previous program record of six against East Tennessee State University on May 1, 2009. The team’s 19-1 margin of victory is also the biggest in Division I history.

FGCU immediately jumped to an early lead in the top of the first after freshman Alex Brait followed a double from junior Matt Reardon with a two-out RBI single to right field.

The Eagles extended their lead 3-0 in the top of the second with back-to-back RBI doubles from junior Julio Gonzalez and Reardon.

Freshman Marc Coffers then hit his first collegiate home run over the left field fence to score two more runs. Gonzalez later followed with a solo homer to right field, making it a 6-0 game.

NJIT’s Evan Pietronico hit a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third to get the Highlanders on the scoreboard, but the Eagles responded with a solo home run from Garcia.

After Reardon’s sacrifice fly to center extended the Eagles’ lead 8-1 in the top of the fifth, the storm of hits continued for the rest of the game.

The Eagles and Highlanders will face off once again for the series finale Sunday at 11 a.m.
