North Port Police Department adding body cameras

Published: Updated:

In an attempt to give officers another level of accountability, North Port police officers are attaching body cams while on duty.

These body cams give more context to what goes on between a cop and a potential suspect, or any scenario they might find themselves in where conflict arises.

The NPPD will be utilizing the body cams for a 30-day trial, in lieu to dash cams, which they say sometimes doesn’t tell the whole story.

They say it will help when they come to the he-said-she-said type of situations.

Only 10 officers will be wearing the cams, during the 30-day trial. And the cameras don’t come cheap, they could around $225,000 annually.

While the technology is costly, it’s proven to be extremely effective, and are used by multiple other departments in Southwest Florida.
