A DeSoto County suspect considered armed and dangerous has been apprehended after originally eluding deputies.

According to DCSO, DeSoto County deputies responded to the home of suspect Marvin Bates’ mother after he contacted DCSO regarding the sheriff’s office’s open case for his arrest.

Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office confirms Bates was apprehended after he fled from DeSoto County deputies Thursday afternoon.

Bates originally told DCSO over the phone he refused to go back to jail and threatened suicide. DeSoto deputies responded to Bates’ mother’s home and found him in a car holding a knife to his throat.

After deputies worked to deescalate the situation, Bates fled the home in the vehicle and led first responders on a chase. Deputies had to stop pursuing Bates after it became too dangerous for the public.

Bates fled DeSoto County deputies into Charlotte County, where he was eventually found and apprehended by law enforcement.

DCSO had an arrest warrant active for Bates for fleeing to elude law enforcement, leaving the scene of a crash and domestic battery.
