Ida forecast to make landfall as Category 4 hurricane in Louisiana

Published: Updated:

Happy Friday, Southwest Florida!

Expect highs to reach the 90s again with breezy winds at times.

There will be a few breaks in the clouds that will fuel triple-digit heat index values during peak heating.

A few isolated showers will form around sunrise. Afterward, partly cloudy skies will make way to scattered thunderstorms after lunchtime.

Rain chances will remain scattered into this weekend. We are returning to our typical rainy season pattern.

There is now a named storm in the Atlantic!

Ida has become a hurricane as it nears the Isle of Youth in Cuba. It has a sustained wind speed of 80 mph.

The latest National Hurricane Center forecasts have Ida making landfall in Louisiana on Sunday night as a Category 3 or 4 hurricane. This system poses no threat to Southwest Florida.

There are three disturbances in the Mid-Atlantic. Two have a good chance of formation over the next five days. Regardless, our latest model guidance suggests that neither of these will bring impacts to the United States. A third, with a 30% chance is now moving off the African coastline.

The next two names on our 2021 storm naming list are Julian and Kate.
