Residents in Fort Myers and Cape Coral headed to the polls on Tuesday to decide on new city council members, but all three races in the two cities will be moving on to runoffs in the general election in November.

Fort Myers:

The Fort Myers City Council seat for Ward 3 was the only Fort Myers City Council seat on the ballot. That race is headed for a runoff between incumbent Terolyn Watson, who got 48% of the vote, and Chantel Rhodes, who revived 24%.

Following the results being announced, Watson said, “Well, it’s very exciting because I got 48% of the vote. That lets me know that people are behind me, that lets me know that as soon as the Ward 3 trust I know their council lady and I am the best one for the position.”

Rhodes also commented on the upcoming runoff, saying, “Wow, we have a lot of work to do. But I am so appreciative to everyone who came out who went to the polls who voted.”

Cape Coral:

In Cape Coral, there were two city council seats on the ballot for District 1 and District 4.

In District 1, Gloria Tate chose not to seek re-election. That seat will have a runoff between Bill Stenke, who worked for Miloff Aubuchon Homes, and Carol Rae Culliton, a long-time supporter of nonprofits in Cape Coral. In Tuesday’s primary, Stenke received 45% of the vote, and Culliton received 25%.

Incumbent Jennifer Nelson is headed for a runoff against Patty Cummings in District 4. Nelson got 45% of the vote, and Cummings received 28%. This is the second time Cummings is running for a seat on the Cape Coral City Council.
