Scattered Storms Expected; Fiona in the NE Caribbean

Published: Updated:

The Weather Authority expects soggy weather at times for your weekend, with a mix of sun and clouds, highs in the low-90s, and scattered storms each afternoon.

Saturday will start off nice with partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 70s and 80s.

By the afternoon hours, temperatures will climb to around 90. The heat will be enough to spark scattered storms in the afternoon and evening.

Looking ahead to the workweek, expect daily storm chances across Southwest Florida. Otherwise, temperatures aren’t expected to budge much, with highs in the low to mid-90s and lows in the upper-70s.

In the tropics, we’re watching Tropical Storm Fiona. As of the 5 p.m. advisory, Fiona is located in the NE Caribbean Sea with maximum sustained winds of 60 MPH.

Fiona is forecast to pass south of Puerto Rico on Sunday before striking the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas at hurricane intensity Monday into Tuesday.

A hurricane warning has been issued for Puerto Rico, including Vieques and Culebra. Meanwhile, a hurricane watch is in effect for the U.S. Virgin Islands, south coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to
Cabo Caucedo and the north coast of the Dominican Republic from Cabo Engano westward to Puerto Plata.

Beyond that, Fiona is expected to turn northward towards Bermuda as it feels the influence of a strong trough digging into the eastern United States. The bottom line is Fiona is unlikely to threaten us in the United States, but we’ll watch it.

Otherwise, there are two other disturbances in the Atlantic with a low chance of tropical development over the next five days. Neither of those two poses a threat to Florida at the moment.
