Deputies are investigating a deadly shooting on Matheson Avenue in Bonita Springs on Monday morning.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred at the 27000 block of Matheson Avenue, not far from the First Assembly of God Church. The sheriff’s office said it is investigating the shooting as a homicide.

Neighbors nearby said law enforcement was at the scene since at least 9 p.m. Sunday night.

Just two blocks away from the crime scene tape, Roger Cuellar lives in his ‘oasis.’ On Sunday night, that oasis turned into his hideaway.

“I told my kids don’t go out, you know, unless it’s like, like, right now. The sun up,” said Cuellar.

Cuellar said it is usually a nice life over off Matheson Ave., but when he drove home to find deputy lights, he knew that scene looked all too familiar.

“I like it, it’s very quiet. It’s just, you know, happened this like last night. This is the second time, actually, a couple of years ago happened. Pretty much the same thing,” Cuellar said.

In 2018, a woman was murdered on a patio right next to where deputies are investigating the recent shooting.

“Pretty much the same thing. The same city, same coordinate, I guess,” said Cuellar.

There are differences between these two crimes, but there’s no changing the way Cuellar feels. “You know, a little scary that’s happening. It’s really close to our house here. But you know, I know the police gonna take care of it.”

Shooting or not, Cuellar said he still feels his oasis is a safe haven.

“I always see a lot of police around here. You know, they are always around, so that’s why we feel secure but sometimes, these things happen,” Cuellar said.

Neighbors say they believe the reason their fence is now broken is related to this homicide investigation.

They said they went out to celebrate a birthday and then came home to all of the deputies and a broken fence.

LCSO said they are still working to confirm the victim’s identity.
