Police have found a man’s body in the Caloosahatchee River behind the Fort Myers Yacht Basin.

According to the Fort Myers Police Department, an officer spotted the body near 1300 Lee St., behind the Fort Myers Yacht Basin, around 7 a.m. Thursday. FMPD said the dead person was a man likely between 30 and 40 years old, but it is too early to determine the cause of his death.

FMPD closed off the area near the Caloosa Sound Amphitheater in order to investigate, but it has since reopened. Police expect an autopsy to be performed later Thursday.

Reid Renouf, a man staying across from the crime scene at the Luminary Hotel, told WINK News he saw everything unfold.

“I saw the police boat with its light coming across the bay area here and park at the ramp, and then as I came down to work out, they were roping this area off,” Renouf said. “It’s not something you expect to walk out of a nice hotel and see, you know, actually right in front of the hotel. So sad… and shocking.”

Police said it’s too early to determine the cause of death.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
