The long-awaited return of the downtown Fort Myers post office is soon over, as the location is expected to reopen on Monday.

According to the United States Postal Service, the reopening delays were caused by waiting for the property’s landlord to make the necessary repairs.

The location had an expected reopening date for January, then late February, where the opening date was pushed again to late March.

WINK News spoke with Fort Myers Councilman Liston Bochette regarding the delays.

“There is just nothing going on, and that’s inappropriate, that’s inexcusable, and maybe this interview will rattle some people in the federal government to pay attention to our needs down here,” said Bochette. “The post office which services the city government, county government, state government, federal government, banks, businesses and thousands of citizens in this area.”

The location will only be able to send mail starting Monday.

There has not been a determination when retail operations will become available.
