The Cape Coral Police Department has officially launched its Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Program.

The UAV Program, police said in a release Tuesday, is another tool the agency is using to keep the community and officers safe.

The technology allows the department to survey the sky in minutes.

The UAVs can be deployed in various situations, including assisting with traffic operations, collecting evidence at a crime or crash scene, searching for a missing person or suspect and more.

All UAVs will be operated by a certified remote pilot who has complete control and responsibility for the UAV.

A visual observer, someone trained in operations and tasked with keeping a constant line of sight of the UAV while it is airborne, is required for all flights.

All officers using the UAVs will have to pass the flight operations training, abide by all Florida State Statutes and FAA regulations and attend monthly UAV training.
