The Fort Myers diverging diamond project near I-75 at Colonial Boulevard has reopened for motorists.

The Florida Department of Transportation crews worked diligently over the weekend, putting travel lanes into the final configuration, including lane restriping and installing signs and traffic signals.

Motorists are hopeful that this next step in the diverging diamond project will help alleviate the busy area.

“Definitely makes me feel a little better. The roads might be a little bit safer because a lot of people who are out of town will come in, and they don’t know the roads as they are, let alone with the construction. So I think that construction being finally done is definitely going to take some pressure off of everyone,” said motorist Gabi Kerness.

The Florida Highway Patrol has several cruisers deployed to help commuters navigate through the diamond, assisting motorists to become accustomed to the new changes.

Motorists exiting the I-75 ramp will no longer wait to enter Colonial Boulevard as the diamond redirects drivers to the opposite side of traffic.

Once drivers are on the opposite side of the ramp, the diamond redirects motorists back to your exiting side of the road, creating a smoother transition.

Monday will be the first test of the diverging diamond for motorists as FHP braces for the morning rush.

WINK News will continue its coverage regarding the impact of the newly established driving intersection.
