Fort Myers council members will decide on Tuesday night if Downtown Fort Myers gets to keep free parking after 5 p.m.

Councilmembers have approved free on-street parking in downtown Fort Myers after 5 p.m. on weekdays and all-day on weekends.

Not only will this save you money to park, but it is expected to bring more people to downtown.

The meeting began around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and the decision was revealed about an hour in.

Parking in downtown Fort Myers has seen its ups and downs.

With a bridge closure, it was hard enough to get people across the Caloosahatchee and into businesses.

On top of that, paying to park was implemented.

The idea of free parking after 5 p.m. helped attract people to downtown again out of season. Now, as season begins, councilmembers have agreed to keep it free for those evening hours.

Council member Darla Bonk brought up free parking for the rest of the council to consider at Tuesday night’s meeting.
