The Lee County Electric Cooperative is encouraging people to conserve energy as temperatures drop throughout Southwest Florida.

LCEC says one of the ways to conserve energy is to forego using a home heater.

Heaters can increase energy use, resulting in higher electric bills for customers.

Some people haven’t turned their heater on yet this winter.

“I made it through the night without getting cold,” a Lee County resident said. “I might turn it on, but it’s nice compared to the summer, so I take the cold weather.”

WINK News spoke with other residents, who said that keeping their heater off isn’t an option for them.

“I have my parents with me, so I have to turn it up regardless of what they say,” said Armand Navarro. “I’m just dealing with it.”

If you’re looking for a few alternatives to stay warm and conserve energy, LCEC has a few tips:

  1. Wear warm clothing or bundle up with blankets to maintain body heat.
  2. Open curtains or blinds during the day to allow natural sunlight to warm your home.
  3. Seal door and window gaps with draft stoppers, weather stripping, or rolled-up towels.
  4. Sip on hot beverages like tea, coffee or hot cocoa to stay warm.
  5. If using a space heater, opt for an energy-efficient model and follow all safety guidelines.

LCEC also recommends avoiding outdoor appliances like grills or portable stoves indoors, as they emit dangerous carbon monoxide fumes.
