Fort Myers Beach‘s town manager has announced he will not renew his contract and plans to return to northern Florida.

Tuesday morning, Andy Hyatt provided the town council with a 100-day notice of his decision.

For security reasons, Hyatt was accompanied by a Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputy during the town council meeting.

Mayor Dan Allers and other council members expressed their support for Hyatt’s decision to step down and requested his assistance with the transition process.

The Fort Myers Beach Town Council meeting was far from ordinary, however. As the council members discussed their usual agenda items, tension grew toward the end of the session.

Mayor Allers said, “When it’s abuse to your family, and we have to have a deputy here because our town manager is afraid—not for his safety, but for his family’s safety—we have gone too far.”

On April 17, 2023, councilors approved a contract with Hyatt to become the new town manager of Fort Myers Beach starting May 1, 2023.

The terms of this initial contract were to last for two years, with options for extensions later, based on performance.

Hyatt’s departure marks a significant change for the town, and the council is preparing for the upcoming transition period.
