Marco Island city leaders are considering a proposal for police officers to wear body cameras. The idea aims to modernize the department and increase trust with citizens.

Councilwoman Tamara Goehler is advocating for the Marco Island Police Department to adopt this technology.

Body cameras, worn on the front of police uniforms, serve as a tool for accountability. They have been used in other areas, such as Charlotte County and Cape Coral, to provide transparency in police actions.

Community members at Mackle Park expressed support for the proposal.

Don Pringle said, “I think it’s a great idea to help them protect themselves because they’re always trying to hang a policeman for doing their job. It’s right there. They got proof that, ‘Hey, I did not do it,'” he said.

Another resident, Purdy, added, “I think it’s good to arm the police with the ability to see whatever happens when they’re confronted or when they have to confront others, and I think it’ll have broad support, but speaking for myself, I’m a big proponent of it.”

The police department has not commented, stating it is too early to provide a statement. This proposal follows a no-confidence vote by the Marco Island Police Union against the police chief.

The union has not yet responded to requests for comment.
