A road rage shooting on Saturday night left residents of Charlotte Harbor concerned about safety in their neighborhood.

On Sunday morning, traffic moved swiftly on US-41, a stark contrast to the previous night.

“This is the third incident that we’ve had at this corner in about six weeks,” said Kandis Hanson, a local resident and former city manager in Minnesota.

Hanson lives near the site of the shooting and expressed her unease about the incident happening so close to home.

“It’s very disconcerting,” Hanson said. “You don’t want this kind of element in your neighborhood.”

On Saturday night, Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office vehicles closed the southbound lanes on the bridge connecting Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte.

“It could happen to any one of us,” Hanson said. “We could, any one of us could be the subject of that road rage, and very upsetting.”

The sheriff’s office appears to be focusing on a red Ford pickup truck, though they have not disclosed why or how it is connected to the investigation.

Hanson and her community are eager for answers.

“It’s alarming,” Hanson said. “To live in the midst of it is very disconcerting. It’s not the neighborhood I want to live in, necessarily, if this is going to keep recurring.”

Residents like Hanson are contemplating their future in Charlotte Harbor, hoping for a resolution before considering leaving the area.
