LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- Deputies uncovered a major drug operation taking place underground.

Officials responded to a tip of a possible grow house located on the 500 block of Scott Avenue, near the Hendry County border.

Once authorities obtained a search warrant to enter the home, they discovered an elaborate underground marijuana cultivation operation.

Police say the residents were able to dig under the foundation of the home and construct an area designed to grow large amounts of marijuana beneath the house.

According to officials, ports had been cut in the floor of the house and covered with carpet so as not to be noticed from inside the house.

Police seized 31 plants with an approximate street value of $93,000.

Neighbors say they’re not surprised to find out that drugs were being grown inside the home.

They say the family abandoned the home just a few days ago before deputies made the discovery. No arrests have been made.
