TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – A north Florida sheriff told legislators he was ordered by his former bosses in the state’s prison system to ignore evidence of possible criminal behavior by a warden.

Gulf County Sheriff Mike Harrison worked as an inspector with the Department of Corrections before his election last year. Harrison testified under oath before a Senate committee Tuesday.

Harrison did not get into specifics about the warden’s conduct, saying only it involved the cover up of alleged medical neglect committed by a prison nurse. The warden was allegedly having a relationship with her.

The warden was fired but he sued over his dismissal. A jury in January sided with Ted Jeter and awarded him damages.

Harrison was one of several former and current employees who testified about problems in the prison system.
