Title agent accused of stealing from clients

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Department of Financial Services announced the recent arrest of former title agent Lana Dargai of Estero for stealing more than $705,000 in client funds intended for real estate transactions.

As a result of her fraudulent actions, the underwriter for the funds was forced to cover the losses.

An investigation by the Florida Department of Financial Services’ Division of Agent and Agency Services and Division of Insurance Fraud found that Dargai, doing business as Global Title Company, stole the funds from clients in May 2010 and August 2010.

She faces up to 15 years in prison for first degree grand theft and fraud charges. Her title agent license has also been revoked. Dargai’s case will be prosecuted by the office of 20th Judicial Circuit State Attorney Stephen Russell.

Anyone with information about suspected insurance fraud is asked to call 1-800-378-0445. Citizens who provide tips can remain anonymous.

The Department of Financial Services has awarded $365,000 to 63 citizens as part of its Anti-Fraud Reward Program. The program rewards individuals up to $25,000 for information that directly leads to an arrest and conviction in an insurance fraud scheme.
