CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- Keeping families safe from house fires, that’s the goal of the Red Cross and Charlotte County fire and EMS this week.

Monday, they announced three vulnerable areas in Charlotte County have been chosen to receive free 10 year smoke detectors installed in their home.

Organizers say it’s very important to have working detectors. Just this weekend, police say a Punta Gorda woman’s life was saved because of a smoke detector.

“In the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, we had a senior citizen that was alerted by a working smoke detector in her home that her house was filling with smoke. It allowed her the time to get out and be safe and a tragedy was avoided,” said Chief Marianne Taylor with the Punta Gorda Police Department.

People who live in El Jobean, Parkside and Tropical Gulf Acres in Charlotte County can call the Red Cross to get their free smoke detectors.
