ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – An Orlando police officer accused of shooting 23 times at a suspect fleeing through a parking garage has been fired.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the officer was fired after an internal investigation.

According to the department, the officer opened fire 23 times on a suspect fleeing from a downtown Orlando apartment complex. Records show the officer was more than 90 feet from the suspect and the two were separated by closed metal gates.

The suspect later crashed the vehicle.

In a letter terminating the officer, officials wrote that because the exit gates were closed and the officer could not see the suspect his use of deadly force was unreasonable.
