MIAMI (AP) – A South Florida man has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to a string of armed robberies.

Federal prosecutors said Wednesday that 39-year-old Michael Childs admitted to committing the stickups in 2013 and 2014 in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. In at least two robberies, Childs fired shots at either convenience store employees or customers.

Childs and 26-year-old Charles Lovett were prosecuted under the federal Hobbs Act, which includes lengthy prison sentences for armed robberies and other crimes. Lovett was sentenced to nearly 12 years behind bars.

Prosecutors say Childs had been convicted of a robbery previously in Pennsylvania. He was identified in the Florida case through a fingerprint left at the scene of a robbery in Miami’s Liberty City section.
