FORT MYERS, Fla. – How can a metronome save a child’s life?

The American Academy of Pediatrics’s Journal of Pediatrics published an article discussing just this. Here to tell us all about this and more is Dr. Annette St. Pierre-MacKoul.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation = CPR:

Vital when someone’s blood flow or breathing stops.
Consequences: brain damage or death.
Life saving technique that anyone can learn.
70% of Americans do not know how to do CPR.

Metronome improves percentage of compressions delivered:

Two rounds of chest compressions were studied.
One round with metronome and one without.
Improvement in %-age of compressions using metronome.
Acceptable rate of compressions = 90-100 per minute

More data:

With metronome = 72% acceptable compression rate.
Without metronome = 50% acceptable compression rate.
No affect on hand position or effectiveness of compressions.
