Republicans warn Obama not to veto defense policy bill

WASHINGTON (AP) – House and Senate Republicans are warning President Barack Obama not to veto a $612 billion defense policy bill because of a partisan fight over government spending.

House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that the annual bill is one of the few bipartisan measures to become law 53 consecutive years. He urged Obama to pick a different way to make his point.

Congress and the White House differ over whether spending caps should be broken for defense, but adhered to for domestic agencies.

The bill authorizes the amount of defense spending Obama requested, but he doesn’t like the way Congress did it.

Lawmakers increased defense spending by padding a separate war-fighting account with $38.3 billion. That account – for overseas contingency operations – is not subject to spending limits.
