FORT MYERS, Fla.- One person is dead following a fire at a home in the Brandywine community near Cypress Lake.

The fire erupted shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday. Dozens of firefighters from the Iona McGregor, South Trail, and San Carlos fire departments worked to put out the flames. The fire appeared to have started in the garage, where a charred vehicle was found inside.

“I saw a burning car and immediately thought that was the cause of the fire,” said Alex Villalon. “It was just pure flames and heat, that’s all I felt, I was standing so close that I could feel the heat.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The identity of the person who died has not been released, but neighbors say an elderly man lived in the home by himself.
