FORT MYERS, Fla.- The installation of 115 cameras in downtown Fort Myers, the first phase in a citywide project, was completed in just three weeks, Fort Myers Mayor Randy Henderson announced on Thursday.

Fort Myers city leaders hope the cameras will curb crime or help law enforcement solve crimes. Henderson says the camera system, which cost the city $446,000, was installed quickly because the city was already wired for the project.

“The technology that’s here leverages cameras that are 10 times more powerful than traditional cameras that you might see,” said David Antar with IP Video Corp.

Sixteen of the cameras pan, tilt, and zoom. The cameras also have 10 times the resolution of regular security cameras. The video recorded will be saved for 30 days to allow law enforcement to pull the video and use it as evidence if there’s a crime.

During major events, such as Thursday night’s New Year’s Eve celebration, the city will have someone manning the cameras all night to monitor the crowds.

“There isn’t a city in America right now, this moment, that is as sophisticated as the City of Fort Myers in this regard. In a way of surveillance, in the way of reaching out and having the opportunity to catch a would-be perpetrator who’s going to decide to threaten our citizens,” said Mayor Henderson.

Henderson says the city will be monitoring hot spots for crime around the Fort Myers and install cameras in those areas next.
