SANFORD, Fla. (AP) – Officials say a clerical error led to 66 Sanford police officers being overpaid for off-duty work.

According to the Orlando Sentinel (bit.ly/1ZRgSHd), officials said Thursday that the officers will have to pay the city back $19,806 after they were overpaid for working off-duty during a four-month period last year.

Sanford’s finance director Cindy Lindsay says a worker in her department mistakenly typed in a wrong computer code last September that led to the officers being overpaid during a 12-week period ending in December.

Lindsay says the city investigated and discovered the error after an officer said he’d been overpaid.

Lindsay says the average overpayment was $300.

City officials say officers that were overpaid will see deductions from their paychecks over the next 12 weeks beginning Friday.
