Road conditions create hike in tow emergencies

FORT MYERS, Fla. – It has been a busy two days for tow truck drivers.

Storms dumped inches of rain in most areas throughout Southwest Florida, which was left with flooded roadways.

Deep puddles, slick roadways and low visibility became huge factors to drivers on the road. A combination of those conditions had Josh of AFA Towing answering a lot of calls. He said the activity is unusual for January.

On Thursday he responded to nine drivers in trouble.

“It’s pretty much everybody just being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said. “A lot of vehicles hydroplane, or their following too close and they slide and rear end somebody.”

Careless driving could end up in ruined vehicles, Josh said.

“A lot of times if the vehicle is going into the water it could be a total loss, depending on what happened that caused them to go into the water — whether they hit somebody or something,” he said.

So far, Southwest Florida has experienced more than 12 inches of rain.
