TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Florida voters may soon be allowed to choose the state’s top voting official.

A Senate panel on Wednesday approved a measure that would call for the election of the secretary of state. Voters in 1998 approved a constitutional amendment making the post appointed.

The legislation (SB 1424) heads next to the full Florida Senate. If the Florida Legislature approves by a three-fifths vote, voters would still have to approve the change this fall. So far the House hasn’t shown interest in changing the post.

Sen. Aaron Bean, the Republican sponsoring the bill, says the Secretary of State should be an elected position, so that the state’s top voting official is “more accountable to the people.”

Other GOP senators say they support the move so there is an elected advocate of the arts and museums.
