FBI mum on 21st Century Oncology fiasco

FORT MYERS, Fla. – An FBI spokesperson avoided providing direct answers to questions about why the agency advised Fort Myers-based cancer giant 21st Century Oncology to wait five months before telling patients about a cyber breach.

In early March, 2.2 million people received a letter from 21st Century Oncology, but according to the letter the breech occurred in October 2015.

A spokesperson for the FBI said the agency could not provide much information as it continues to investigate. The FBI did release a statement saying: “The FBI understands the importance of coordination with victim companies and will utilize the investigative tools within our authority to identify, pursue, and defeat cyber adversaries.”

A law enforcement source said the FBI may have asked 21st Century Oncology to delay patient notification in order to build more evidence against criminals.

Four class-action lawsuits have been filed in federal court against the company, accusing 21st Century Oncology of failing to protect patient data.
