Crews work to extinguish flames off Gasparilla Road in Placida

PLACIDA, Fla. – A fire continues to spew a column of dark smoke at Charlotte Organix, located at 5301 Linwood Road off Gasparilla Road in Placida, as crews worked overnight Thursday to keep nearby buildings safe, authorities said.

The blaze isn’t threatening any structures and no injuries have been reported, but people in the area should expect to continue to see smoke Friday, a Charlotte County Fire and EMS spokesperson said.

Crews responded to the fire after 2 p.m. Thursday, but upon approaching the fire, they called for additional backup, according to authorities.

Charlotte Organix is a composting company and authorities said the fire will not be put out until sometime Friday, at the earliest, because mulch is creating a lot of fuel. The flames are sending smoke west toward Rotunda, authorities said.

There is one home, a business and a roof truss manufacturer nearby. Crews are working to get the flames under control, authorities said. None of the fire has been contained, according to authorities. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
