FORT MYERS, Fla. — A woman was slain and a suspect was found dead after a shooting Monday morning at the Pebble Court Apartments on the 2900 block of Jackson Street, authorities said.

The body of 29-year-old Whitney Kugelman was found outside the apartment building near a breezeway at about 6:10 a.m., according to police. The suspect, 40-year-old Michael J. Nesse, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in one of the apartments a few hours later, police said.

Residents nearby were evacuated while Nesse was presumed to be alive and holed up in the apartment. The Lee County School District opened the gym at Fort Myers Middle School for people displaced by the evacuation.

The intersection of Hanson and Jackson streets was temporarily closed off for the investigation, which included a SWAT team.
