Cape Coral firefighters battle flames with ‘turbo drafting’

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Firefighters have implemented a technique called “turbo drafting” to offset a lack of fire hydrants on the north end of the city.

Instead of connecting to fire hydrants, firefighters connect their hoses to their trucks or canals.

“The canals is one of the things that does make the city very unique,” said division chief Ryan Lamb. “If we didn’t have the canals, it would definitely put us at a disadvantage.”

Still, firefighters agree using fire hydrants are much faster and offer more water.

“From turbo drafting you’re looking at roughly 300 gallons a minute to 1,000 to 1,500 gallons a minute from a fire hydrant,” Lamb said.

The fire department said more fire hydrants will be installed in the north end of Cape Coral once the utilities expansion project is complete.
