CAPE CORAL, Fla. — An evacuation advisory issued for all homes within 1,000 meters of an overturned fuel tanker has been canceled, a Cape Coral Fire department official said shortly after 3 p.m.

The wreck happened early Sunday morning on Del Prado Boulevard North, between Averill Boulevard and DeNavarra Parkway. Traffic is being rerouted to Gator Circle via DeNavarra Parkway and Averill Boulevard, according to a CCFD Facebook post.

The driver of the fuel tanker was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

About 9,000 gallons of fuel spilled from the overturned tanker, and multiple crews were taking steps to contain the spill. While firefighters worked, the tanker caught fire, CCFD said.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat-related injuries, but are expected to be OK.

Hazmat crews were on scene helping to make sure the highly flammable fuel did not get into the soil or nearby canals.
